Screen Idols is a small but perfectly formed exhibition from Magnum Photos at 99 Mount Street Gallery in Mayfair.
Famous names from the silver screen captured by equally famous names from the Magnum agency adorn the walls. From Marilyn Monroe to James Dean, Sophia Loren to Jane Fonda, these often hauntingly intimate portraits capture not only a moment in time of the artist, but also on the film industry itself. A time when photographers were not only on set throughout the whole movie shoot, but also forming personal and long lasting bonds, such as Eve Arnold’s with Marilyn and her last film The Misfits or David “Chim” Seymour and a series of a young Sophia Loren playing up to the camera in her Rome apartment.
Here too, as a wonderful contemporary companion to these golden age Hollywood portraits, a series of colour portraits by Paolo Pellegrin of the Oscar nominees from 2008, including a strikingly beautiful photograph of Kate Winslet lost in another moment.
And with beautiful synchronicity, the gallery on Mount Street for this current exhibition is only a few doors down from the home of Eve Arnold, and was where her gallerist Zelda Cheatle used to exhibit.
So take a detour from the madness of the Christmas or Sale shopping, stroll down charming Mount Street, and come into a little oasis of 1950s and 60s Hollywood glamour at 99 Mount Street and get intimate with the stars.
Screen Idols is on until 31 December.
